One thing that being at the hospital so much allowed was for me to get high without worrying about Taij walking in on me.
I needed this hit to calm nerves that had gone haywire with news of Lyric’s mother coming. I knew that I had to have this talk. Yet, there was a small part of me that hoped Lyric would never find her mother so that I wouldn’t have to.
Lately, this walk down memory lane had been overwhelming; in addition to watching Tricey just lie in that bed with no signal of life in her body. Visiting the old neighborhood had left a funny feeling over me. Old memories were swimming around in my mind while I was more appreciative of the people in my life than I had ever been. Yesterday, before Michael and I parted ways, he gave me MeShon’s number, insisting that I call him because, for years, he wondered where I was and how I was doing. Instantly, memories of my slain best friend, Charles, came flooding back into my mind as Lyric and I drove through the old neighborhood. Guilt filled my heart. He had been there for me when my mother died. When he died soon after, it was as if God had taken the rest of my heart away from me. His mother and brother, MeShon, continued to be there for me. Yet, I cut them off along with everyone else when me and Taij’s relationship was uncovered.
Ms. Smith still lived a few blocks away. That was another relationship that I needed to mend. But between Tricey’s condition, the memories, and having to face this truth about who my father was, I just couldn’t take much more. So, I stored the number, reserving that reunion for when things calmed down a bit.
As I walked into the lobby, I realized that that time may not come soon, however. There Lyric’s mother was. She was like staring into the eyes of a past that I knew nothing of. She was also like staring into my future. She was frail. Her skin was deteriorating. Life on the streets had definitely taken a toll on her health and appearance
“So why y’all brang me here?” Still, she was that feisty mouthed lady that spit out my truth while standing over her husband's casket.
“Sit down, mama. Vic needs to talk to you.” Lyric talked to her mother like she was annoyed with her. I was sure that after all these years, Lyric had had it with her mother’s addiction. Instantly, I thought about the coke swimming through my body and DeSire.
The thoughts gave me the eeriest of feelings as I watched Lyric’s mother fidget and scratch as Aunt Candy made her sit down between Lyric and I.
“What you got to talk to me about?”
Before I could say anything, Lyric asked her, “Are you high, mama?”
She smacked her lips and huffed and puffed dramatically. “Hell nah I ain’t high. That’s why I need some money. You got some?”
Lyric ignored her with a dismissive wave of the hand in her face.
